Suan Pan Zi is like an Chinese gnocchi, made from pureed yam and some kind of flour, tossed with gravy with chopped braised shiitake mushrooms, served with chili sauce. Since I don't know the original suan pan zi (where would I taste this?), I can only refer to the one I had in Singapore. In Japan, it is extremely difficult to purchase yam so I had to opt with gnocchi made from simple sticky rice flour. Consistency is okay but I should have blended with some potato puree for that distinct consistency. Accompanied chili sauce is made from scratch using dried and fresh chili with garlic and the aromatics.
